Overview
Santorini is the rim of a collapsed volcano, and every part of the island is arranged to make the most of that fact. Oia and Fira cling to the caldera's edge, their blue-domed churches and cave houses built specifically for the sunset view most visitors come for. The island rewards a slower pace than the day-trip crowds usually allow.
Getting There
Santorini's airport (JTR) has frequent flights from Athens (45 minutes) and seasonal direct flights from several European cities. Ferries from Athens' port of Piraeus take 5–8 hours depending on the vessel. A rental car or ATV is the most practical way to explore beyond the two main towns.
Top Things to Do
- Watch the sunset from Oia's castle ruins, but arrive at least an hour early to claim a spot.
- Walk the caldera-rim trail from Fira to Oia (about 3 hours) for views without the crowds.
- Visit Akrotiri's excavated Bronze Age settlement, preserved under volcanic ash since 1600 BCE.
- Swim at Kamari or Perissa, the island's black-sand beaches on the opposite coast from the caldera.
Local Tips
Hotels in Oia book out months ahead for sunset season — reserve early or stay in quieter Imerovigli for the same views with more availability. The caldera-side towns have very few ATMs, so carry some cash.
