Overview
Banff National Park's lakes owe their striking turquoise color to glacial rock flour suspended in the meltwater, most famously at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. The town of Banff itself is small and walkable, but the park's real draw is the network of trails reaching alpine meadows and viewpoints within a few hours of the townsite.
Getting There
Calgary International Airport (YYC) is the nearest major airport, about 90 minutes from Banff by car or shuttle bus. A rental car is strongly recommended, since many of the park's best viewpoints and trailheads are not well served by public transit.
Top Things to Do
- Arrive at Moraine Lake at sunrise; parking fills within an hour of opening in peak season.
- Hike the Plain of Six Glaciers trail from Lake Louise for mountain and glacier views.
- Ride the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain for a panoramic view of the town and surrounding peaks.
- Soak in the Banff Upper Hot Springs after a day of hiking.
Local Tips
Parks Canada requires a park pass for entry, purchasable online or at the gate. Wildlife, including bears and elk, is common — keep a safe distance and store food properly at campsites.
